Dragonball GT is simply the next saga which follows Dragonball Z. Just like Dragonball Z Follows Dragonball, as does Dragonball GT Follow Dragonball Z. If you are confused by this, then think of it like this. The Entire Dragonball Manga is divided into 2 parts. The Dragonball Part, and the Dragonball Z Part. The creator of dragonball made Dragonball, and then Dragonball Z as a "sequel" to Dragonball. The only reason that Dragonball GT exists is because Dragonball Z did so well, that the American production staff got together, and decided that they should make another series called GT. Meaning that Dragonball GT was not made by the same person that made Dragonball Z and dragonball.
This is explained in some differences that Dragonball GT has from the ideas, and beliefs of Dragonball Z. First of all, Dragonball GT has a "Super Saiyan 4" which has no blonde hair, and has a tail. This goes against the belief of Dragonball Z, which clearly states that a Super saiyan must have Golden or blonde hair, and he/she cannot have a tail. There are some other messed up things such as the fact that Vegeta, growing his tail every time he turns super saiyan 4, and then when he reverts back to normal, he loses it again. But the american owners FUNimation didn't care, because they wanted to make money, so they went against the wishes of the original creator, and made Dragonball GT the way it is now. This may be one of the many reasons why Dragonball GT didn't do as well as Dragonball, or Dragonball Z. But on the positive side of things, Dragonball GT has amazing animation, meaning that it is much better in that field then Dragonball Z or Dragonball.
As a final note, Most of you are probably reading this because you really don't know what dragonball GT is, well the GT stands for Grand Tour, and to find out what that signifies, you will have to either go watch it on Television, or download the episodes, and watch them.
